First on the agenda was Cançonier in Berkeley. (Well, technically the concert was in Albany, CA, at St Alban's [link] famous for its stained glass and proximity to Starbuck's.) Some readers may recall that in my journal I reported on their "Vlad" show last fall. Well, they're back. It was a wonderful show of medieval German music... [link] (By the time you get there, they might have changed the "next event" blurb, but what we heard on Saturday night included Hildegaard von Bingen, Oswald Wolkenstein and friends from the pre-renaissance. Incidentally, in June they are apparently going to release a CD of their (in)famous "Vlad" show, so people are already lining up to get it.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, believe it or not, I saw PDQ Bach [link] live in San Francisco at Herbst Theater. I've always wanted to see him, and finally got the chance. (The new "Jekyll and Hyde Tour", as it's billed, may not be his absolute best, but it was a funny afternoon well spent with a long-time idol of mine.)
The only problem with both of these concerts was the one-hour drive on either end of each concert so, all in all, it was not a very green weekend, and I feel guilty about that, so I'll probably stay around Santa Banana for a while, holding in my carbon emissions.
